One question we often get asked is: where to eat in Vila Nova de Milfontes?
António is from Milfontes, and since we visit several times throughout the year, we’ve had the chance to try many of the restaurants in town and nearby. Over time, we’ve built our own list of favorites — from traditional spots to more modern ones, and even those perfect for a beach lunch or to enjoy the sunset.
Here are our personal suggestions for anyone looking for great restaurants in Vila Nova de Milfontes:
1. Pátio Alentejano – tradition and great value
If you’re looking for a traditional restaurant in Milfontes, Pátio Alentejano is always a safe bet.
Fresh grilled fish, fried cuttlefish, and even a delicious whelk bean stew are some of the dishes that keep us coming back. Friendly service, fair prices, and that warm, family-style Alentejo atmosphere.
2. Tasca do Celso – the most famous classic
Probably the most well-known restaurant in town, Tasca do Celso never disappoints. The food is excellent, with top-quality ingredients and traditional dishes cooked to perfection. Yes, it’s pricey, but it’s still one of the great classics of Milfontes and well worth a visit.
3. Porto das Barcas – fancy, but top quality
A little outside the center, Porto das Barcas is the place to go if you’re looking for a more refined dining experience. The Bulhão Pato-style fish is a must-try! It’s also one of the pricier restaurants in the area, but the quality makes it worthwhile, especially for a special occasion.
4. O Pescador – seafood and monkfish rice
For seafood rice or monkfish rice lovers, Restaurante O Pescador is a must. Authentic flavors, generous portions, and that homestyle touch that makes the food so comforting.
5. Alento – tradition reinvented
This one is one of our personal favorites! Alento blends traditional recipes with a fresh perspective from young local chefs. The result is surprising: delicious, creative dishes that still keep their Alentejo roots.
6. O Amândio – fish and meat outside of town
A true Alentejo tasco, O Amândio is located just outside of Milfontes and serves fresh fish and tasty meat dishes. It’s simple, unpretentious, but the food is always spot-on.
7. Guarda Rios – perfect after Furnas beach
If you’ve spent the day at Praia das Furnas, Guarda Rios is a great choice for lunch on the other side of the river. Casual, convenient, and always good food.
8. Alcanto – a promising newcomer
We recently tried Alcanto, a new restaurant in Milfontes, and were pleasantly surprised. We know the chef and loved our first experience there. Definitely one to watch!
9. A Choupana – unforgettable sunsets
Finally, a classic for late afternoons: A Choupana. Nothing beats clams or grilled fish with the tide going out and the sunset in the background. It’s expensive, but the experience is worth every euro.
